Battery recycle law in effect
NEW YORK STATE - Batteries now included when it comes to recycling statewide.
A new state law is now in effect, making it illegal to throw rechargeable batteries in the trash. Rechargeable batteries must be returned to recycling bins at retail stores.
The law is aimed towards batteries for electronics like laptops, cameras and phones.
Retailers without a receptacle face fines up to $5,000. Individuals who knowingly throw out batteries face a $50 fine.
